[Atlanta, Georgia]  Pressure mounts on Governor Deal to veto controversial Arizona copycat bill, HB 87, with dozens of demonstrators planning to gather outside the Governor’s rescheduled inaugural ball this evening with a clear message of opposition – and announcements of impending boycotts.  Somos Georgia and other concerned Georgians say that Governor Deal holds the fate of the state in his hands – and urge him to rethink his previously stated commitment to sign the bill into law.

“The Governor should take heed of the thousands and thousands of his constituents who are imploring him to resist the pressure from the extremists.” said Kathrin Ivanovic of Somos Georgia.  “There will be a boycott if this bill becomes law.  People of conscience nationwide will not come to a state that legislates hate and bigotry.  Georgia will lose money, jobs, and we’ll lose our reputation as a good place to visit and do business.  The impact will be devastating.  And Governor Deal can stop it with the stroke of his pen.”

Organizers say that Deal and his supporters should be aware of the snowball effect of the impending boycott.  “We cannot coordinate or control the dozens of boycotts we have been told about that will go into effect should HB 87 become law,” said Paulina Hernandez of Somos Georgia and co-Director of Southerners on New Ground.  “Corporations and businesses are worried – and they should be.  Georgia stands to lose much more than Arizona from these kinds of economic sanctions and it will be Governor Deal who is to blame for the losses.”
